In my last post I explained the materials you will need for your first resin project. If you missed it and are not sure of the supplies, you will need you can catch up here: Posts | Wix.com.
Today I want to actually get started. The surface I work on is glass which works really well with resin because it's easy to clean up with alcohol. If you don't have that, you can work on a silicone mat.
When you bought your mold, usually in the description of the mold it tells you how many ounces of resin you will need. If you don't know that, another way to determine the amount is to fill the mold with water and then measure the water, just know that you will need to get all the water out of the mold as resin and water aren't compatible. Once you have the amount of resin you need, pour half of the amount in your plastic cup of part A and half of the amount of part B. Use the popsicle stick to mix the resin. As you are mixing, do it slowly with the stick at the bottom of the cup. This will help prevent bubbles. Overall, you will mix the resin 3-5 minutes, and I usually use a timer, so I know for sure how long it's been mixed.
If you are adding color, add the pigment a little at a time until the desired color you are looking for. Let your resin set for about 5-10 minutes to get rid of any bubbles that you may have stirred up.
Pour the resin into the mold until you fill it to the top. Use the heat gun (or grill lighter) over the surface of the top of the mold to get rid of any bubbles. I also usually take a toothpick and go around just inside the top of the mold to catch any bubbles that may be hanging around. Keep checking the mold every 5-10 minutes for about 30 minutes looking for additional bubbles that rise to the top. Use a toothpick to pop any bubbles you find. Let the product sit overnight and demold the next day.
